Imagine being at the Exposition Universelle - the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900, celebrating the achievements of the past century and exhibiting the latest innovations, giving a glimpse of what was to come in the the 20th century. You would have marvelled at talking films and escalators, a giant telescope, and little Russian nesting dolls, as well as the building itself. The stunning Grand Palais was constructed especially for the Expo, and in a small corner of it was the “Travel and Leather Goods” Section, with one booth displaying leather goods and trunks on an eye-catching carousel. This stand was manned by none other than Georges Vuitton (the son of Louis himself). Over one hundred years later, it is fitting that the same historic venue has been selected to be the home of Volez, Voguez, Voyagez - Louis Vuitton.
Translated as Fly, Sail, Travel - the exhibition designed by Artistic Director Robert Carsen and curated by Olivier Saillard has been conceived as a thematic journey divided into nine chapters, (in nine different rooms of the Salon d’Honneur), tracing the incredible history of the fashion house from its inception in 1854. Expect to see antique pieces from the heritage collection of the brand as well as more modern bags and ready-to-wear, and learn about the inspirations which ensured that LV stayed one step ahead of its competitors. The exhibition fittingly starts with an iconic 1906 antique malle (leather trunk) and ends with a section dedicated to Craftmanship. I for one can’t wait to visit and transport myself to the turn of the century.
The exhibition runs from 4th December 2015 to 21 February 2016.
