Upcoming Events Sage Gateshead

I love planning to see gigs and concerts in the autumn/winter, especially around Christmas. I'm not a massive fan of typical Christmas traditions but there are a few events I don't tend to miss every year and most of them are at Sage Gateshead.

Luckily we're spoilt for choice for events going on in Newcastle, and Sage Gateshead's programme over the next few months is no exception. There's an eclectic mix of contemporary, classical and Christmas themed concerts, with something for every musical taste!

There's a lot going on for pop music fans. Fan of late 90s/early 00s TV? Specifically Ally McBeal? Vonda Shepherd, who was behind the music for the hit show graces Sage Two with her presence on 9th October. I'm defintely up for a night of nostalgia and a reminder of one of the reasons why I studied law (laughing emoji). I am jumping firmly on the bandwagon and really looking forward to Kate Bush Live-e-oke on 14th October. Expect epic singalongs to Wuthering Heights and that song from Stranger Things - KB inspired fancy dress is encouraged.

I remember seeing Nerina Pallot support Coldplay years ago and she's still creating gorgeous ethereal music. I love her version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" featured in Normal People. Catch her on Thursday 20th October. The legendary Stylistics bring their 27 date tour to the Sage on 3rd November for a memorable evening of Philadelphia soul. Regarded as one of the world's greatest tribute bands, Brit Floyd will be rocking Sage One on Sunday 13th November with highlights from all five of their best-selling albums and a 23 minute mammoth rendition of "Echoes."

80s music is my happy place so I can't wait to see Calling Planet Earth on Thursday 8th December. Relive your younger days with an incredible live band who'll turn back the clock with symphonic arrangements of Duran Duran, Soft Cell, Tears for Fears, Spandau and more.

The jewel in the crown of the Sage is the world-renowned Royal Northern Sinfonia, who offer a diverse programme for the 2022/2023 season. First up is RNS: Kobekina Plays Schumann, featuring his only cello concerto played by renowned cellist Anastasia Kobekina. Then Glittering 20th Century on 21st October, which celebrates music bursting with colour and light (featuring Barber, Stravinsky and Ravel). Bowie fans assemble for RNS Play Glass: The Bowie Symphonies. The influential composer Philip Glass has created symphonies inspired by the legendary albums Low and Heroes. Expect an epic crossover of pop and classical on Friday 28th October.

Gemma New conducts Glittering 20th Century, Nil Vedetti conducts European Dances, Thomas Zehetmair and Anastasia Kobekina playing Schumann

RNS: European Dances welcomes conductor Nil Vendetti and violinist Eldbjorg Hemsing for a lively evening celebrating the folk music of Eastern Europe and Turkey. Featuring overtures and dances by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Brahms, catch this scintillating performance on 11th November. Conductor Laureate Thomas Zehetmair's leads a musical journey through London, featuring viola virtuous Ruth Kilius on 25th November in RNS: Zehetmair's London (before launching into its Christmas concerts).

The festive Christmas programme gets underway with RNS by Candlelight on 1st December. Enjoy classical festive favourites by Bach, Purcell and Part conducted by Dinis Sousa. This performance is being toured between 1st December and 8th December at various venues around the North East. If you're looking for an alternative to the Wham and Mariah Carey heavy festive celebrations, check out the Soul'd Out Christmas Party on 10th December.

We all know that Christmas isn't Christmas without MacCauley Culkin creatively defending his domain. I'm already projecting forward to December 11th and RNS: Home Alone In Concert, enjoying that amazing John Williams score nursing a mulled wine. Musical theatre fans will love RNS: Christmas on Broadway on 14th December which celebrates hits from The Lion King, Mamma Mia and Frozen plus many more. Sage Gateshead is Curious: Winter Cabaret on 15th December brings top notch performers together from around the country for a night of festive fun. And from 22nd to 24th December immerse yourself fully in the Christmas spirit with the annual screenings of The Snowman with live music from RNS (there are seven performances over three days).

Halle Orchestra, Belgian Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Angela Hewitt

Other classical highlights showcase the talents of international orchestras. On 9th October the Sage welcomes London Philharmonic Orchestra, new Principal Conductor Edward Gardner and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. The Belgian National Orchestra visits on on 5th November to play the massively popular Symphony in D Minor by Cesar Franck and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1. World renowned pianist Angela Hewitt stops by on 27th November to celebrate the genius of Bach, Mozart and Chopin. And don't miss the exquisite Halle Orchestra from Manchester on 2nd December and its unforgettable renditions of Tchaikovsky, Barber and Wagner symphonies.

This round up only covers around half of the events at Sage Gateshead so please visit their What's On pages to see details of all of the great concerts on between now and the end of 2022.
