After a crazy weekend at the Vogue Festival seeing talks by the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano (blog to follow), I thought I would be able to get off the fashion carousel for a few weeks to get my breath back. Not so. This morning I opened my inbox to find news of a new look NE1 Fashion Week, a shorter two day event with the focus on sharing knowledge and the contribution made by Northumbria University's Fashion Department to the industry. I have to say I was pleased that the organisers have adopted a more Vogue Festival kind of approach - a shorter time frame with top industry players imparting their knowledge to those of us looking to having a career in Fashion.
I could hardly contain my excitement as I read the news that Henry Holland would be speaking at the event, in conversation with Vogue Fashion Features Editor Laura Weir. I'd missed him talking at London Fashion Week so I'm excited to hear about his approach and inspirations.
Then I could barely believe what I was reading when I saw that Vogue Editor in Chief Alexandra Shulman OBE would be talking about her stellar career - a major coup for Fashion Futures and a great opportunity for fashion students to hear her advice on how to make it in the industry.
The event will take place on May 13th and 14th, with Day One featuring Northumbria University's Catwalk Show FASHION at the Baltic (the work produced by the students was exceptional last year). The show traditionally attracts leading international buyers and fashion industry insiders.
Day Two sees talks with Henry and Alexandra, as well as a panel talk featuring Darren Spurling, Managing Director of international footwear brand Terry de Havilland as well as prominent Northumbria University Fashion graduates who have established themselves in the industry - Kate Ablett (designer at Berghaus), Charis Younger (menswear designer at All Saints) and Michelle Taylor, who owns her own lingerie brand Tallulah Love.
Following the talks, the ever popular Fashion Front Row event will take place in the evening showcasing the best of North East designer talent.
I personally love the fact that the emphasis has been placed on helping people from the North East to get into the fashion industry and celebrating the contribution that Northumbria's fashion department has made.
