It's not often that the spotlight is shone on knitwear, a vital component of modern fashion. Chanel would be nothing without the revolutionary use of jersey in her iconic designs, and Missoni and "Queen of Knitwear" Sonia Rykiel wouldn't exist without it (perish the thought).
Thankfully knitwear will soon be celebrated in an upcoming exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in South London. For a four month period fashion fans will be able to see examples of inspirational 20th century vintage knitwear. Visitors will be guided through the decades, from 1920s Chanel jersey through to 80s and 90s conceptual pieces by the likes of Comme des Garcons and Vivienne Westwood, and also learn about the history and technology involved in creating this versatile material.
The clothes will also be joined by the fashion photography of Norman Parkinson, who was commissioned by the likes of Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Queen magazine to take iconic images over his illustrious thirty five year career.
