North East Museum to experience Pleasure and Pain with latest Fashion Exhibition

I love it when you miss an exhibition in London then find out that it's moving to another venue only twenty miles away from where you live! I meant to get to Shoes: Pleasure and Pain at the V&A when I was in London for Fashion Week in September but time ran away from me (in great heels). When I saw the tweet from Bowes Museum this morning it made my day!

After the museum's massive success with Yves Saint Laurent: Style is Eternal last year, they've gone and pulled off another fashion coup; it's the only museum in the UK outside London that will stage the exhibition before it goes over to the USA and China.

Shoe addicts will be in heaven - seventy of the world's best shoe designers including Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin will feature in the exhibition which will include over 200 pairs of men's and women's shoes, some dating back to 2,000 years old. The pain element refers to extreme footwear on display such as Chinese lotus shoes from the 19th century used for the extremely painful practice of foot binding.

The exhibition focusses on the emotions provoked by these most important of accessories and is divided into five themes - transformation, status, seduction, creation and obsession. As a result of not being displayed chronologically expect a visual treat of different styles, shapes and materials in each section.

I'm looking forward to seeing historical footwear alongside iconic pieces worn by the likes of  Kylie and Sarah Jessica Parker. Thank you Bowes Museum for making my day!
